Where every
Where every
word comes from.
Every Irish word and phrase on this site, and in our printables, was copied from one of the pages below and checked against it on 30 October 2026. The site’s facts (dates, census figures and quotes) were checked the same way. Words we couldn’t find in these sources were left out.
How we handle dialects and pronunciation
- Dialects. Phrases are labelled Connacht, Munster or Ulster only where Gaelchultúr’s lessons label them. The dictionaries give standard forms.
- Pronunciation. No invented sound-alike spellings. The only two used are Gaelchultúr’s own. For real voices, use teanglann.ie, where native speakers of all three dialects say each word. teanglann.ie’s Pronunciation Database lets you hear words in the three major dialects, Connacht, Ulster and Munster, spoken by native speakers from each dialect. Foras na Gaeilge, teanglann.ie: Pronunciation Database (Connacht, Ulster and Munster recordings) ↗
- Computer voices. abair.ie (ABAIR) builds speech technology for Irish, including computer voices for Irish (synthesised speech, not recordings of people). The ABAIR team is at the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory, Trinity College Dublin. Phonetics and Speech Laboratory, Trinity College Dublin: Screen Reader Voices for Irish by abair.ie ↗ abair.ie offers “Téacs → Caint” (text to speech). - Place names. County and province names come from S.I. No. 519/2003. logainm.ie asked for a captcha when we checked, so we didn’t use it, and we don’t give place-name meanings.
- Who runs Ranganna. Ranganna.com is owned by Gaelchultúr. Ranganna.com (Gaelchultúr) ↗
